How to buy from Taobao when the seller will not ship abroad

You found the exact thing on Taobao. The price is a third of what it costs at home. Then you message the seller and get the same answer everyone gets: sorry, we do not ship overseas.

It is not personal, and it is not a scam. Here is what is actually going on, and the three ways people get around it.

Why they refuse

Most Taobao sellers are small operations, often one person and a warehouse. International shipping means customs forms, English addresses, returns they cannot handle, and payment disputes they do not understand. For a $4 item, the paperwork costs more than the profit.

Some will ship if you ask nicely and pay. Most will not, no matter how nicely you ask.

Three ways around it

  1. A forwarder. You buy with a Chinese address, the parcel goes to a warehouse in Shenzhen or Guangzhou, and they ship it on. Cheap per kilo, but nobody opens the box, and nobody answers when the seller sends the wrong colour.
  2. An agent who buys for you. Someone with a Chinese account orders it, receives it, checks it, and sends it. You pay a fee per order instead of per kilo. Slower to set up, much less painful when something goes wrong.
  3. A friend in China. Free, until the third parcel, and then it is not free anymore.

What it actually costs

Rough numbers, from real orders I have sent:

  • Domestic delivery to a warehouse: usually free, sometimes ¥8–12.
  • International shipping for a 500g parcel to Australia: around $12–18 by economy air.
  • Agent fee: $5–10 per order is normal. Anyone charging 20% of the goods is making their money on the wrong side.

So a $15 item often lands at $30–35 all in. Still worth it for things you cannot buy locally, and not worth it for things you can.

What to check before you trust an agent

  • Do they show you the original order total, or just their own number?
  • Will they open the parcel and photograph it before shipping?
  • What happens if the seller sends the wrong item — who argues with them?
  • Do they charge storage if a second parcel arrives a week later?

If the answers are vague, keep looking. The work is not complicated, but it is only cheap when someone actually does it.
